Mimms Enterprises and Malon D. Mimms Company are fourth generation family-owned commercial real estate investment companies based in Roswell, GA. Both companies specialize in the acquisition, construction, redevelopment, leasing and management of retail, industrial and office properties. The combined portfolios total nearly 7 million square feet in the Metro Atlanta and spread around the Southeast.
Company Timeline
Family-owned Mimms Enterprises is a sister organization to Malon D. Mimms Company, which is run by Malon Mimms, the son of family real estate patriarch Thomas Mimms. Over the years, Malon’s three sons have built Roswell, Ga.-based Mimms Enterprises into one of largest Atlanta commercial real estate firms. Loyalty, a dedication to service, a pledge to work in an ethical and virtuous manner, and a commitment to the health and vibrancy of the Southeast are hallmarks of the organization.
Motivated by cultivating long-term relationships with retail, office and industrial tenants and prioritizing customer relationships, associates at Mimms Enterprises take pride in helping their customers find the optimal solution for their business needs. But this illustrious commercial real estate legacy didn’t happen overnight.
1936
A family tradition is born
The same year Margaret Mitchell publishes “Gone with the Wind,” the seminal book of the South, Thomas Bowman Mimms decides to leave his post as director of Georgia’s public welfare department. Mimms had been pursuing real estate as a hobby after work, and it was time to make the hobby his career. He dedicates his time to building custom houses with his wife, Alice, and purchasing real estate in the still-growing Atlanta region.
1948
Exploring industrial development
Thomas Mimms purchases land at the intersection of Peachtree and Bennett streets to begin developing industrial buildings. This area, which is a block away from present-day Piedmont Hospital, is now known at the Bennett Street Arts District and is dominated by art galleries and antique stores.
1955
Malon joins the family business
Malon Mimms, fresh off duty as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, joins his father in the family real estate business. The Mimms men mostly work developing warehouses in the area until Thomas retires in 1962. Malon then begins Mimms Enterprises to focus on shopping center redevelopment.
1968
An eye toward retail growth
Five years after beginning Mimms Enterprises, Malon makes the company’s first significant retail purchase: North Decatur Plaza, a short drive to the recently desegregated Emory University campus, is a shining jewel in the Mimms portfolio.
1973
Mimms makes a statement
Mimms Enterprises purchases its largest property to date, North DeKalb Mall, tucked just inside Interstate 285 a mere 10 miles from downtown Atlanta. The mall is less than 10 years old at the time of purchase.
1979
A third generation arrives
After beginning his career in Kansas, David Mimms travels back home to join his father in the family real estate business. He begins his Mimms Enterprises tenure by overseeing leasing and construction. He is currently chairman of the company.
1984
Lonnie joins his brother
After earning an electrical engineering degree at Georgia Tech, Malon “Lonnie” Mimms, Jr., joins Mimms Enterprises to handle accounting, programming and leasing. Lonnie currently serves as CEO.
1989
Three sons to carry on the legacy
The final Mimms son, Robert Mimms, comes on board to manage the leasing and marketing departments. Robert currently works as president of Mimms Enterprises.
